R-values
The R-value of insulation products is a measurement of its thermal resistance – the higher the R-value, the higher the resistance to heat. Under the NZ Building Code (NZBC), new homes must be insulated to a minimum standard, Aotearoa is divided into three climate zones that have specific R-values for each climate zone – see below:

Where to insulate
The most common areas to insulate is the ceiling, underfloors and walls.
- Ceiling - Homes lose, on average, 42% of their heat through the ceiling. Installing insulation in the ceiling retains the heat inside the house during winter, and stops heat from entering in through the roof during summer.
- Underfloor - Heat loss through the floors is estimated at 10%. Installing underfloor insulation will reduce cold draughts, reduce noise and will keep floors warm.
- Walls – 18-25% of heat loss of a house is through the walls. Insulating internal walls will reduce heat loss as well as reducing noise. Wall insulation is most common for new builds whereas walls are more difficult to retrofit as wall linings will need to be removed prior to insulation.
